When I shoot for clients, there is a very specific need at play. They need an image or a set of images for their marketing, and their usage helps define how I shoot. When I nerd out on a shoot, whether it’s for a client or in my personal work, I tend to shoot tight. I love love love to get up close and personal with my subject matter, the more macro the better.

Even though most clients need wider angles to showcase their product, tight shots like these lend themselves very well to social media and email marketing. They give a depth and intrigue that wider angles don’t always convey. They have taste appeal, they make you want to reach into the photo and grab it. They show off packaging details in ways that wider angles can’t, like embossing and spot gloss and cartouches. They show the beauty in an object, in a vine, in a cocktail. They allow the viewer to get closer than they normally would to a piece of cheese, even if they’re eating that cheese! There’s a art in shots like these: curves, lines, colors, textures…
